What can I do right now to ease my TMJ pain?

Finding temporary TMJ relief depends on the severity of your symptoms. However, the following self-care techniques may provide temporary pain relief:

  • Moist heat from a heat pack or a hot water bottle wrapped in a warm, moist towel can improve function and reduce your TMJ pain.

  • Packs can decrease inflammation, numb pain, and promote TMJ healing. Wrap the ice pack in a clean cloth and apply it for ten to fifteen minutes.

  • Eat soft foods to allow the jaw to rest temporarily.

  • Avoid hard, crunchy, and chewy foods.

  • Over-the-counter analgesics are helpful in temporarily obtaining TMJ relief. Be sure to check with your doctor before taking any kind of medication over any prolonged period of time.

  • Slow, gentle jaw exercises may help increase jaw mobility and provide TMJ relief. Your doctor or physical therapist can evaluate your symptoms and suggest appropriate exercises based on your individual needs.
