Test for Diagnosing TMJ Syndrome
There are several tests used in diagnosing TMJ disorders. For a full TMJ examiniation visit our office located just north of Atlanta. Some of the most utilized diagnostic tests for TMJ Syndrome include:

Arthrography

An accurate diagnostic tool to understand TMJ syndrome, arthrography involves an injection of contrast dye into the TMJ followed by x-rays, tomograms, video tape, or a combination of media to allow study of TMJ position and function.

Computed Tomography (CT or CAT Scan)

These scans show greater detail of the jaw bone in multiple directional planes with a minimal dose of radiation. CT scan is used to look for ankylosis (fusion) of the temporal bone to mandible.

Conventional X-rays, including Panorex

Because of its limitations, the use of x-ray technology to diagnose TMJ disorders is generally limited to ruling out obvious changes and disease in the bony structure of the TMJ.

Tomography

Like regular x-rays, tomography shows only the bony structure of the joint so its use is subject to some of the same limitations in diagnosing TMJ disorders. However, tomography does show a more detailed view of the TMJ, as it shows "slices" through the joint.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

An MRI produces detailed and accurate images of the mandible and temporal bones as well as meniscus position and is considered the best way to study the TMJ.
